Cat 5a, Cat 6, Cat 6a or Cat 7?

Rebecca Jones

If you have fiber at the door and want to know how to make the best use of the speeds available, it depends on the specs of your in-house cable. Fiber has the potential to provide you with speeds of  100Mb per second (ps). In-house, Cat 5a cable will also give you 100MB/ps, Cat 6 will give you 1GB/ps, while Cat 6a will give you 10GB/ps. Cat 7 provides the same speed of 6a but better performance by guarding against 'crosstalk' also known as 'alien crosstalk'. Alien crosstalk comes into play with these higher speeds and is defined as unwanted electromagnetic noise in a cable originating from another cable which is close by, negatively impacting performance.
